Wind farms with floating wind turbines (FWT) will be installed at depths between 50m to 100m. In these depths, the structures, mooring lines and power cables are colonized by biofouling and will therefore affect the mass and hydrodynamic properties of the structure.
The presence of fouling changes the hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, corrosion properties and weight of an offshore structure (accumulated fouling can represent up to 10% of the mass of a structure). Best practices for managing operational fouling include cleaning and inspecting underwater infrastructure using divers or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and applying antifouling products. Removing fouling reduces the weight of the floating structures, and the removed fouling falls to the seabed and becomes part of the natural marine environment again. Bravo Marine has developed the C-RAY® ROV, an underwater cleaning system, capable of removing fouling from round (pipe-like) surfaces (vertical, horizontal or diagonal).
